In Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana Usage Becomes More Accepted by the People of the State

The New England region has been known as one of the most conservative regions of the United States since the creation of the nation, over two-hundred years ago. It wasn’t until after the American Civil War, that people began saying, “The United States is…” rather than, “The United States are…” due to the borderline extreme conservative habits shown by the North(1). This is why it comes as rather a surprise to most Americans that the people of the North are becoming more in favor of the use of Marijuana for medical purposes. In fact, groups within the Northern region of the country are beginning to trend in the favor of new legalization legislation being passed to allow the medical usage of the substance. Specifically, Massachusetts has become much more in favor of the usage of Cannabis over the past few years, to the point where it is predicted any legislation put up in favor of legalizing it would pass without a second glance or much of an opposition(2).

A new piece of legislation will be coming up soon for Massachusetts to debate the legalization of Marijuana. As a matter of fact, the latest the proposal is said to come is November of 2016, meaning that both lawmakers and people are rallying to rush the passage of a piece of legislation like this one. There is only one factor which may indicate trouble for the bill. Last year, a referendum was launched by Massachusetts Bay in attempts to legalize Cannabis, however; just barely did not obtain enough signatures to advance to the next level in the law-making process(3). Although this might shoot up a minor warning sign, an unprecedented amount of support has risen up in Massachusetts over a short period of time, increasing the chances of the new bill passing into effect. Other than the one red flag, there is no reason to believe such a piece of legislation would not pass. This would put Massachusetts on par with many other states as well, who are also making the jump to legalization. Soon, the question will be answered. Will Massachusetts turn over a new leaf in their history, or will they revert back to their old ways. Only time shall tell.
